Experiment 05 · Setup Diagram

Optical Fibre

Three connections and one measurement. Light is coupled into the fibre, spills out of the far end as a cone, and lands on a screen carrying four fixed circles. Slide the screen until the beam matches one of them, then read off how far away it had to move.

AC mains Transmitter Scientech 2506 Optical Fibre NA jig θ₀ W L

Procedure

  1. 1.

Click "Insert Fibre" to place the fibre between the transmitter unit and the NA jig.

  2. 2.

Switch on the mains supply to the transmitter unit.

  3. 3.

Choose one of the jig's four fixed circles — its diameter is w — and slide the screen until the cross-section of the laser beam coincides with it.

  4. 4.

Note the distance L between the screen and the jig at that position, and record the diameter w of the circle it matched.

  5. 5.

Work out the numerical aperture, acceptance angle and acceptance cone from L and w using the formulae below.

  6. 6.

Repeat for the remaining three circles.

  7. 7.

    Check and verify the result.

N.A. = w / √(4L² + w²)
w is the diameter of the fixed circle the beam was matched against, L is the distance from the jig at which it coincided
Acceptance angle θ₀ = sin⁻¹(N.A.)
Read off directly once N.A. is known
Acceptance cone = 2θ₀
Twice the acceptance angle, swept about the fibre axis

Graphics acceleration is off 3D simulations can’t run here yet Graphics acceleration is on

3D simulations run slower without it. Turning it on is recommended.

The simulations need WebGL 2, which isn’t available in this browser right now. Turning on hardware acceleration usually brings it back; if not, update the browser or the graphics driver.

3D simulations are running with hardware acceleration. Nothing to change.

On a college lab computer this setting may be locked. If so, ask the lab in-charge.
